Is this “healthy food” making you fat and sick?

Is corn healthy or making you sick and overweight?

Contrary to popular belief, corn is a grain, not a vegetable, and is really not appropriate as a dietary staple for several reasons:

1. The problems with “antinutrients” in corn (and other grains too)
2. The inflammatory aspect of excess omega-6 fats in corn products
3. The blood sugar disrupting nature of corn products.

Can you get a flat “corn-fed” stomach

When civilizations such as the Mayans and Native Americans changed their diet to a corn-based one, rates of anemia, arthritis, rickets, and osteoporosis skyrocketed.

Our bodies were not made to exist on such a high quantity of grain-based foods as is present in the modern western diet. This evidence shows up in the archeological records of our ancestors. When archaeologists looked at skeletons of native Americans in burial mounds in the Midwest who ate corn as their primary staple, there was a 50% increase in malnutrition, four times as much incidence of iron-deficiency, and three times as much infectious disease, compared to the more hunter-gather ancestors who primarily ate meats and fruits and veggies as opposed to grains.

Keep in mind that we are not just talking about corn-on-the-cob (sweet corn) here… we are also talking about corn cereals, corn chips, and other modern corn-based foods that are promoted by food companies as “healthy”. There are several reasons researchers give for the nutritional problems and the weight gain caused by a corn-dominated diet:

• Corn contains lots of fast digesting starches and sugar, which raises insulin levels, causes you to be hungrier and causes your body to store calories as fat. Don’t be mistaken, just because corn does not taste obviously sweet, doesn’t mean it isn’t full of sugars. Once eaten, your body quickly turns corn based foods into sugar. Even the starches in corn products can be broken down very quickly by your body spiking your blood sugar levels, and causing cravings for more carbohydrate-based foods.

• Corn is also a poor source of protein, usually deficient in 3 of the 8 essential amino acids: lysine, isoleucine, and tryptophan. The essential amino acids are so-named because they must be obtained from the diet, since the body is unable to manufacture them.

• Corn contains a high amount of phytate, a chemical that binds to iron and inhibits its absorption by the body. So, consequently, a diet high in phytate can make people more likely to have iron-deficiency anemia and fatigue. Phytate is also a nutrient blocker (an antinutrient) and inhibits other vitamins and minerals from being utilized.

• Corn is a poor source of certain minerals such as calcium and some vitamins such as niacin (B3). Deficiencies of niacin can result in a condition known as Pellagra, which is common in civilizations that eat a lot of corn. It can cause a variety of symptoms such as dermatitis, diarrhea, and depression. Since we are now a nation of corn-eaters, it wouldn’t be surprising that this is more common here than we realize.

• Corn oils are also used in most processed foods (along with soybean oils). Both corn oil and soybean oil are excessively high in inflammatory omega-6 fats and low in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats. This throws the delicate balance of omega-6 to omega-3 in your body out of whack and can cause degenerative diseases and weight gain over time. In addition, corn oil and soybean oil are highly refined with high heat and solvents, which oxidizes and damages the fragile polyunsaturated oils, and makes them even more inflammatory when you ingest them in processed foods. Read this article to find out the truth about healthy vs unhealthy cooking oils.

It’s not just people who eat too much corn based foods. A large amount of the nation’s corn crop ends up feeding commercially raised cattle, which are cheaply fattened on corn and other grains before slaughter. Beef from corn-fattened cattle also has much higher ratios of inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids than healthier grass fed beef which contains more anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. Most meat in supermarkets comes from grain-fed animals and not healthy grass fed animals.

Because corn and other grains are an unnatural diet and difficult to digest, cattle raised on corn develop higher stomach acidity, which is a breeding ground for the dangerous E. coli O157:H7, the deadly strain of the bacteria. E-coli is rare in healthy grass-fed meat.

While eliminating refined grains such as corn and wheat (yes, it seems they are in everything!) can seem a very daunting task, the reward is a return to wonderful health, sparkling eyes, clear skin, clear thinking, and less body fat as the body is once again able to extract appropriate nutrients from food, reduced inflammation caused by grain based foods, and a resolution of nutritional deficiencies from the lack of absorption.

Do yourself a favor, and try at least 2 weeks with no grain products at all. I guarantee you will see some drastic improvements in your weight, energy, and general outlook! This is easier than you may think… For example, instead of having pasta with sauce and meat for dinner, a better alternative would be to have just grass-fed meat, sauce, and veggies, topped with a little parmesan cheese. It’s delicious and no grains!

Another example would be breakfast… instead of cereals, bagels, or muffins, try to base most of your breakfasts on cage-free organic whole eggs with lots of veggies and perhaps some bison sausage or other nitrate/nitrite-free turkey or chicken sausage. If you’re very active and need a little more carbs with your breakfast, instead of grains, a small piece of fruit or some tea with a little bit of raw honey can be great additions to the egg/veggies based breakfast. This is a delicious and satisfying breakfast that will control your blood sugar, balance your hormones, and eliminate the problems with antinutrients found in most grains. Those are just a couple examples, but I think you get the point of how easy this can be.

I know it may not be realistic for everybody to give up grains fully, so the most realistic plan for many people is to only eat grain based foods (bread, pasta, cereals, etc) on their one cheat day each week, and save 6 days per week to be grain-free. Your body with thank you!

25 Resume, Interview, Job Search Secrets

1. Never pay an agency a fee for helping you find a job! All reputable agencies receive payment from their client where they place the candidate…that’s you!

2. Even if the assignment is temporary, don’t be fooled, your performance is being assessed for consideration for permanent employment.

3. Sometimes a company will extend job offers on the spot at career expos. The offers are usually contingent on the passing of a drug screen and background check.

4. Join a professional association and volunteer to assist with their events, you will be sure to network with key industry professionals.

5. If you believe you can perform the job duties but are lacking the degree or certification still go ahead and apply. For certain roles the need for a degree or certification can be waived. Also, for some jobs if you show that you have a plan in place to complete your degree or certification within a certain time-frame you will be considered for the role.

6. Relocation assistance is usually reserved for upper level management roles. If a position is listed as not providing relocation assistance be prepared to make the move without any help. Being open to relocation has been crucial in helping many people receive wonderful job opportunities and upward mobility in their careers. If you are flexible and open to relocating without assistance you will become a stronger candidate. At some appropriate time in the interview process (perhaps after a successful in-person interview) inform the recruiter that you are aware that no relocation assistance is provided but you would be grateful for any type of assistance if an offer were to be extended. Often H.R. will be able to arrange for a bonus of anywhere from $1,000 – $5,000 to be included in the offer to offset relocation expenses.

7. The average yearly cost to provide healthcare benefits to an employee is $9,312 and climbing!

8. If you are faced with having to take a pay-cut in order to accept an offer with a more prestigious company you would be wise to accept the offer. In the long-run having worked for the prestigious, highly reputable company will enhance your career. Your background will appear more desirable to recruiters and hiring managers. You will undoubtedly learn skills and processes that will strengthen your ability to perform in the workplace.

9. One of the biggest lies out there is that a resume needs to be one page long. It is perfectly fine to have a resume up to three pages long. If you are a seasoned professional you will probably need more than one page to list your job duties and overall skill-set.

10. Don’t list the date that you graduated from college on your resume.

11. Don’t include in your resume, cover letter or email little sayings; no one cares if you believe that ‘an apple a day, keeps the doctor away’ or whatever your passion/belief is.

12. There are 4 main reasons why a recruiter will quickly pass up your profile that you have created on their career site, they are: Poor grammar and spelling. Improper usernames and passwords. Applying to too many jobs, i.e. applying to over 30 jobs will make you appear as though you don’t know what you are looking for. A lousy resume that lacks critical information.

13. There is a great demand for over-50 applicants to fill positions of employment. Mature workers bring with them dependability and a rich source of knowledge. If you are right for the role, then you are right for the role whether you are 29 or 59 years of age…especially if you have the right certifications or degrees.

14. It is a major turn-off for a recruiter to see the word ‘confidential’ listed anywhere on a resume.

15. For some candidates it can be a fine line between persistence and stalking the recruiter. Leave no more than just one voice message and email per week for the recruiter.

16. When you return a call or email from a recruiter provide your first and last name, indicate the nature of your call and the best way to get back in touch with you. Most recruiters have over 50 candidates that they interact with on a weekly basis thus it will be frustrating for them to receive a return call from ‘Nancy’; don’t assume you are on a first name basis…unless of course you are the stalker mentioned in the previous secret. Also, do not sign any of your email with only your first name. Good communication skills are becoming more and more difficult to find from job seekers. Taking the time to address the recruiter in a detailed and professional manner will put you heads and tails above the other candidates.

17. To be as visible as possible, post your resume on the job boards, create profiles on the social networks and join internet user groups.

18. When asked about your computer skills don’t reply, “All of the Microsoft Suite.” Instead break down the exact MS software you have experience with, i.e. MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint. Don’t forget to mention which email software you use, whether it be Outlook, Lotus Notes or an in-house package.

19. Don’t be vague and general when answering interview questions. Try to be as specific and detailed as possible.

How to answer any job interview question.
20. One of the most under-rated (by job seekers) yet most in-demand skills, that the hiring authority is looking for in a candidate, is the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel. Excellent written communication skills are especially in demand. Well thought out email messages free of spelling and grammatical errors will set you apart from everyone else.

21. Never to proceed to conduct a phone interview if the conditions are not ideal. Don’t try to eat, drink, wash dishes, supervise children or take a long vigorous walk (we can hear your slight panting loud and clear) while conducting a phone screen.

22. No matter how informal the interview setting the interviewer should never ask you questions pertaining to your race, age, religion, whether or not you are pregnant or disabled. If an interviewer blatantly or mistakenly asks you a question relative to one of these topics, simply respond with, ‘I’d rather not answer that question.’ and quickly change the subject.

23. During the final interview process it is ok to mention any impending vacations or special events that you have already arranged and will require time off for if hired. I have never witnessed a qualified candidate being turned down for a job offer because they will need time off within a few weeks of their start date. Some companies will allow you to use your paid vacation time up front while others will let you have the time off without pay but I have never heard of a company not letting you take the time off if you mentioned the need to take the time off prior to an offer being extended to you.

24. After you agree to the terms of your offer letter you should prepare a letter for your current employer informing them that you are resigning. Thank your employer for the opportunity to work with them and be sure to list the date that you intend to be your last day of employment.

10 Tips for Enjoying Your Life More

Are you ready to start enjoying your life a lot more? Do you feel like you are constantly over stressed about things and want something that you can do differently for yourself? You are not along in that pursuit. These days, it seems like everyone is seeking to try to figure out ways to better understand and live their lives more fully when budgets and other things are tight at the moment. That is a perfectly normal feeling that a lot of individuals have. Here are my 10 tips for enjoying your life more:

1. Read more.
Reading more expands your horizons and helps you to gain some new ideas that you can share with others. Plus that can be a great start towards helping you to gain momentum in beginning that novel or other book that you have been wanting to write. Seeing what other authors are doing can provide you that start for yours.

2. Write more.
Writing more allows you to be able to gain the ability to express yourself in new ways. There are several types of writing that you can choose for yourself: blogging, novel writing, copywriting, and more. Choose one and go for it. The sky is always the limit.

3. Start a small business online.
This can teach you a lot of new skills and also can be something that may help you to start earning a little more money that you can use towards paying down debts or starting saving up more. Plus the skills that you learn can be used towards a better or a different job in a different field. Sometimes that can help you find something that you enjoy better.

4. Exercise more.
Exercising more may help you overcome things like depression and other chronic illnesses. Even if it doesn’t completely cover those things, the extra exercise may help to speed up the recovery process or lessen the effects of a disease. That is something that some of you may want to consider for the new year. Exercise is also good for helping you to feel tremendously better.

Traveling can provide you with so many new experiences that you might not have thought about before. It may provide you with some different experiences that you might want to reflect upon later on. That can also make a nice side conversation that you can use for some of the events that you get invited to attend. That is something that a lot of people are impressed with.

7. Reduce your clutter.
Honestly, why do you need so much stuff? I don’t want some of my stuff even from college. A lot of it is just wasted space to me and I can always find a lot of stuff as digital items and can enjoy them that way. Plus, the little extra cash can help out too. Reduced clutter means less to organize and less to keep up with in terms of moving and keeping clean overall.

8. Green your home.
I am not saying go out and get a solar panel and start getting off the grid. I am saying perhaps you need to start a small garden in an unused room for reducing food bills. Using natural light more. These are simple little tips that you can use towards experiencing little healthier choices for yourself and your family. Using these things may also help you to be able to feel better emotionally.

9. Cut out the negative and complain-y people in your life.
Have someone that does nothing but complain? You are not alone. There are several people that just bring others down. While its hard to always be cheerful, there are ways of letting certain individuals go that seem to be Debbie Downers. These individuals may need to be let go so you can enjoy being yourself.

10. Get rid of expectations.
Reducing your expectations and goals will help you to not always be stressed about things. That is something that can be a great start towards helping people to not have to worry about being on a timeline. It turns out, two heads ARE better than one. Today’s article is by Anita Narayan. It’s called

Masterminding For Success

Masterminding for success is a highly skilled process which when applied can bring significant momentum towards goal achievement and dream fulfillment.

Most people associate Napoleon Hill for his book Think and Grow Rich, yet it was his book the Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons that provided the context in which I reviewed this concept of masterminding.

Napoleon Hill documented his study and observations of the most successful business people of his time, including one Andrew Carnegie who was became the richest steel mogul of his time.

Andrew Carnegie did not attribute his success to his own personal knowledge though. Rather he put his success down to surrounding himself with those who had the expertise he required to become successful.

The other part of that was his capacity to facilitate harmony and cooperation between those people toward an end goal.

Click here to learn how to create your own masterminding group

It was this process that led to the concept of the mastermind as we have come to know it, and there are mastermind groups set up all over the world to this end. The principles of success embedded within masterminding are simple, yet profound, and not always easy to apply.

If we take a look at the importance of surrounding yourself with the right expertise for example, who would you choose? Do you choose the best person in your industry and try to engage and access their expertise, as part of your goal planning?

Or do you dilute that process down and choose from your current resources and reality? There is a difference between asking what you can afford to do versus who the best people are to help you achieve your goals and dreams.

Most people look at their dreams and inform them from their current reality rather than look at the ideal reality and work back from that to ask how they can create that path. Depending on which approach you take it can be the difference between stifled creativity and poor momentum and achieving your dream with velocity.

Sometimes we end up choosing the wrong people to work with, or settle for second best with average to dire consequences. So dare to reflect on who the best in your industry would whose expertise you can hugely benefit you, whether as a mentor or consultant or both.

This is a process that may take time as you get to know that person, but an essential process nevertheless, if you value your success.

The other side of Andrew Carnegie’s success was down to his ability to foster cooperation, value and harmony in the way they worked together.

A persuasion expert shares secrets in a free online video

So how well do you build rapport, establish, create and demonstrate value in relationships? Never be afraid to take stock of these things and answer yourself honestly because your capacity reflect with accuracy may be the difference between upgrading the quality of your life and business or not.

I had the privilege of observing the mastermind process when I attended a mastermind group recently. Whilst each group has its own culture I noticed several principles which I consider to be important to all.

First of all masterminding has an intensity of focus to it which is not for the faint hearted. I witnessed tough questions, tears and awakening in this group, and received one myself by default.

The facilitator has to be prepared to ask tough questions that may be confrontative in nature, in order to facilitate growth and breakthrough.

In other words they have to care enough about that person’s success even if it means observing and reflecting back things the other person does not want to hear.

By the same token, the person whose business or personal goals are under scrutiny has to be prepared to be vulnerable, open, honest, responsible and accountable. They must be teachable and coachable.

When done in the right manner and with the right attitude all round the process of masterminding is a powerful process that can serve as a catalyst and fuel momentum towards success more quickly than would otherwise be achieved in isolation.

It’s somewhat ironic that it is called masterminding because the process is not just about the mind, but about the heart and spirit of a person. Masterminding is all about total inner engagement when looking at expertise and the relationships involved.

As long as the concept of value is kept at the heart of all you do masterminding is a powerful collaborative process that should be a key component of your goal and dream planning.
